The prospect of the Cambodian factions reaching an agreement to end

the civil war that has continued for about 15 years is likely because of many

conferences and the support of many countries.

The trend is that the Pol Pot Regime is collapsing by degrees although

there are still sporadic military clashes between the Pol Pot Regime forces and

the goverment.

According to the government, the Pol Pot Regime have been considerably

weakened in force for the following three reasons. First, the number of sur-

renders is on theincrease and only a few thousand militiamen now belong the

Pol Pot Regime. Second, supplies and support of socially positioned countries

has ceased. Finally, their leaders are becoming quite aged.

Since the civil war and the subsequent peace, the domestic situation

has been reconstructed with financial support from international organizations,

overseas aid and an increase in private investment. At the present time, major

irrigation projects and public assistance funds have been implemented by the

Cambodian government to reconstruct the main country's industry, agriculture.

Cambodia also has a shortage ofintellectuals and specialists as a result of

atrocities by the Pol Pot Regime. Cambodia, therefore, is encouraging the

growth of education and training.

Similarly, the government has promoted foreign financial support and

financing of private investment. As a result, the growth of the Cambodian GDP

has increased from 3 percent to 7 percent. Moreover, the rate of the sta-

bilization in current inflation has led to a decline between 10 percent and 20

percent. Inflation has been stabilized.

The financial situation of the government looks much better, although

there are still some problems in the economic reconstruction of Cambodia, and

the Cambodian economy has improved steadily.

Both agriculture and the Cambodian tourism industry are at the be-

ginning of a strong growth phase. The number of tourists who visit Cambodia

from foreign countries is on the increase. This number has grown especially,

since November 1993 when Cambodia adopted a new constitution in the con-

stituent assembly. One set of statistics for 1994 show 170,000 arrivals.

Moreover, 1998 will be " VISIT CAMBODIA YEAR ". Pochentong Inter-

national Airport, Phnom Penh, the main gate to Cambodia and has been repaired.

New hotels will also be build in Phnom Penh with a large proportion of the tour-

ism market as their customers.

Royal Air Cambodge, the Cambodian Airline will be spreading their

wings to Japan, as part of their expansion in the near future. Taking a direct

flight is a very easy way to travel to Cambodia.

The Hotels and other sectors of the tourism industry are constantly

improving their service with training and a range of services, so that they can

provide support to their customers and overseas tourists.
