Cambodia Together

Relationship between Japan and Cambodia started when Morimoto

Ukondayu Kazufusa visited Angkor Wat in the early 17th century.

Only after few year from the end of the World War‡U, Japan and

Cambodia tied the treaty of friendship and cooperation. After that,

different agreements were concluded between the two countries for

structure of a true relationship at the governmental level.

Also the news and information about Japan are often taken up

in the Cambodian mass-media. For example, they introduce different

signing ceremonies held between Japan and Cambodia. It is well known

by Cambodian citizens that Japan is an economically generous country

to Cambodia.

Cambodian people feel close to the Japanese because of sharing

the same religion of Buddhism and the region of Asia. Also, the Japanese

Army was not so cruel to the Cambodian people during the World War‡U.

That is why Cambodian people do not hold an animosity towards Japan very

much.

Because of the peace process in 1991, and the other support

networks, Japan has kept the Cambodian people's trust.

However, relationships at the private level still need to be im-

proved between two countries. For example, there are only five Japanese

construction industries which operate in Cambodia. Four of which are

mostly like agencies which support Cambodia at the gratis level. Only one

trader is operating as an overseas affiliated company.

About investments in Cambodia, Sumitomo Corporation invested

million dollars( Total investment in the factory was 2 million dollars) in a

zonic iron plate factory which commenced operations from 1994. Also

Toyota Tsushou invested 51% of the total investment of 1.2 million dollars

in the car service factory. However, if compared to neighboring countries,

Japanese investments are limited.

Regarding human interaction between the two countries, there

are approximately only 200 Japanese who live in Cambodia. Even compared

with that, there are still only about 1200 Cambodians who live in Japan

which shows that human exchanges between the two nations are still sparse.
